My international travel interest started in Middle School when I went on a trip to Europe with my friend Mark. I’ve been fortunate to travel the rest of the world with my good friend James and then later my wife. I met James while studying in Germany for my Junior year abroad. We started our interest by traveling throughout Europe while we were there. I also studied in Venezuela during graduate school and met a lot of great people, including during my travels through South America. There are some places that really stand out for me and are a little unusual which I’m listing below.
Bagan, Burma (Myanmar)
My overall favorite place. Buddhist temples for miles around all connected by dirt roads which you can travel through by bike. The government is messed up, but the people are very friendly and country overall is beautiful.
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Another messed up government but the country is beautiful. Vic Falls are known for night rainbows – very cool.
Agra, India
One of the few places on earth that is as cool as you hoped. Even though the Taj Mahal was under construction it was much more beautiful than I expected. Also a ton of Indian tourists there and not many Americans. We were as big an attraction as the Taj Mahal itself.
Namib Desert
Believe it or not, there are some parts of Namibia where they speak German – it was a colony at one point. The desert is great and the animals that live there are amazing. The picture on the home page is from there.
Bali, Indonesia
The beach is amazing. James and i planned to stay a few days and we ended up remaining for a month. Dirt cheap too luckily.
Marrakech, Morocco
Great food and market. Went there myself which I don’t do often, but it’s not the worst thing in the world.
Oman
Not as rich as the other gulf states, but that’s what keeps it the most traditional and authentic.
